Orcas Island is worth more than a quick look. Famous for it's historic Rosario Resort
and Orcas Hotel, it also has inns, cottages and bed-and-breakfasts.
For a rustic island getaway, try one of Orcas Island's many beach-side cabin resorts.
A chance to sit on the beach, barbecue, visit with family, watch a sunset or hike a
trail will restore the souls of folks who need a break from fast-paced lives.
With its recreation, wildlife, parks, lakes and arts & crafts, Orcas Island
has too much to catch in a day, but an orienting spin around the island is a good idea
for anyone, whether staying a day or a week.
After pulling off the ferry, grab a good map(such as the Orcas' Chamber of Commerce's
map and guide) and get going. Head north on Orcas Road(formerly Horseshoe Highway) and turn
left onto Deer Harbor Road. Follow this madrona-lined shoreline route to West Sound and Deer Harbor.
These pretty little communities offer marinas, nice places to eat and good photo
opportunities. Watch for deer, eagles and other wildlife.
Back on Orcas Road, stop at Crow Valley Pottery, across from the Orcas Golf Course.
The gallery represents 70 artists, including resident potters and painters.
Housed in an 1866 cabin, it is surrounded by gardens filled with playful yard art.
Across the valley on Crow Valley Road is the non-profit Crow Valley School Museum.
