By July Fourth, the high season has begun and the island can be crowded. Never mind,
an old-fashioned Independence Day is planned. Count on a parade, a picnic, street dance
and fireworks.
San Juan Island begins to wrap up its year at Oktoberfest Oct. 6, usually a very
nice time of year on the island and minus the pushy crowds.
But, always, no matter what the season, San Juan is just downright beautiful.
The quiet tends to enhance its natural elements, too; just pull up the car and park
alongside the road, then listen. It's as if all the critters, small and even smaller,
are having an enormous chat.
